You’ve Built an App – What’s Next?

Building an app can be an adrenaline-charged experience and the thrills of shipping only last for a moment. Then comes the daunting but oh so real question, “I’ve built an app, what’s next?” Once you’ve built and released your app on an app store, you will soon come to realize that building the app was just the beginning. Getting your app in front of users who will find it useful, and making sure they keep coming back to your app on a regular basis is the real challenge. Shift your mindset from building an app to running a business.

User Acquisition

You started out with this great idea and you built an app for it. That was fun, right? Now, what do you do? It’s time to get people to download it! Growing the user acquisition for your app begins with app store optimization. This includes optimizing the text, use compelling screenshots to draw in users, improve your ranking, and our favorite A/B testing to find out which icon or screenshot works best.

The organic acquisition is when you don’t need money to acquire users. When it comes to branding, your name should be short, and the tagline must be clear and concise. Think about what people will search when looking for your app, and make sure keywords are included in your brand. Target relevant leads to cover your app to create word-of-mouth. Additionally, app indexing, in other words, free downloads, is a great way to get organic acquisition.

Paid acquisition includes Facebook ads to encourage sharing. Featured content to focus on segments that get traction. And most importantly, set up analytics and quickly pinpoint what is working.

User Retention

Don’t waste all the effort you put into user acquisition! Now it’s time to retain the users you worked so hard on gaining. This begins with user experience (hopefully this isn’t news to you). By now you should have full respect for the term “user experience,” because this is what your app thrives on. How are people using your app? Do they understand how to use it? Is it time for you to improve your retention strategies?

Re-engaging your customers is never letting your app build dust in the abandoned corners of your users’ devices. Automate engagement by using push notifications or segment users based on usage, location, etc. Don’t ignore feedback! Even negative feedback. Feed off it. First, fix what’s not working, and then build out the backlog of new features. Also, stay in-tune with your app’s performance. Monitor when your app crashes and aim for great performing app to please your users.

Analytics for Growth

Finally, gather information and measure your apps traction. Analytics is about your product working well not the number of downloads. The type of information you want to collect is user behavior, app quality, app store comments and reviews, communication channels, press mentions, and A/B testing.
